In aquariums, Piranhas should be kept in a large tank with plenty of hiding places and a strong filtration system. Tank mates not recommended! They need a meaty diet.
There are actually quite a few species of Piranhas, with estimates ranging from around 50 species. Some of the most common species kept in aquariums include the Red-bellied Piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri), the Black Piranha (Serrasalmus rhombeus), and the Redeye Piranha (Serrasalmus spilopleura). Despite the reputation as killing machines there are even vegetarian Fish closely related to Piranha called Pacu that like to eat nuts and fruit.
