The Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) a formidable predator in our oceans, characterized by silver body, large mouth and sharp dorsal fin. Highly prized by sea anglers around the country, small individuals school together whilst bigger specimen bass are more solitary. The breeding areas around the UK come under protection with minimum size limits in place. They are found in coastal waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea, and the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Bass tend to move inshore when the weather warms in search of food. Reportedly they can grow up to 1 m long (usually much smaller) and the British record was a 19lb fish caught off the Isle Of Wight. Bass are a slow growing species and it can take up to 7 years to reach MCRS (42 cm). They are consequently vulnerable to over fishing. It has a lifespan of up to 25 years.
